I always feared another round of public service job cuts from MYEFO, and today’s reports suggest the Abbott Government will be true to form. I’m particularly concerned about the number of people who will lose their jobs through the abolition of 175 agencies – people who will find out the news on the eve of Christmas. I’m also very concerned by reports that the Australian Government Solicitor will be closed. The AGS has provided legal services and advice to the Commonwealth since Federation. There is no clear cost saving from this measure, particularly given legal work will be contracted out to private firms at a much higher price. Under this government, 7000 public service jobs have been axed in Canberra, unemployment has gone up to the highest rate in 13 years, retail is sluggish and house prices have fallen. The Abbott Government has complete contempt for the public service and complete contempt for Canberra.
