I always feel bad when I refer to God as a he. It would be more - TopicsExpress

I always feel bad when I refer to God as a he. It would be more accurate to say He/She. There are many uses of both genders in scripture to describe God. The Spirit has feminine names. God has masculine and feminine names in scripture. People are described as Jesuss bride, even men, not because Hes going to marry us, but its just trying to illustrate intense love and equality. People are all described as sons, not because were all guys, but like the first born son of a king, were beloved and we inherit it all. All these metaphors use gender and are attempts to describe in ways we can understand, a God who is both native, and other-worldly. He/She is both where we began and where we are going. But due to our relationship failures, some of these things break down. If you had an abusive dad, seeing God called father might not be so great. After the third divorce, the bride metaphor might not be endearing. I think that is why so many relationships are used metaphorically... the hope is that we can catch a glimpse of Him/Her. Scripture is more gender inclusive originally than it is now translated, too. Many of the words recently translated man or men actually mean human. And many times when it just says all, it is translated all men. I am no expert.... you can read all this in an interlinear. Anyway, the word he doesnt encompass God.
