I always find the rigid formality of hearings humorous. This is PIAA, not a government tribunal. Anyhow, the outcome was a unanimous vote of aye in Gabes favor, Gabe has successfully been granted eligibility to wrestle this year in a circumstance never before brought in front of the committee. Its funny that after we made our presentation and were escorted out of the room while they deliberated, the gentleman stated that the bylaws were not meant for this circumstance, and were designed for kids that did not have enough credits for graduation or suffered an injury that caused them to not be in school for a determined period of time and not gain credits. After a wait that seemed like an eternity, it was great to a unanimous vote in Gabes favor. Im very happy for him, and proud of his performance in todays hearing. When Gabe stood up and made a speech off the hip about what wrestling meant to him I was floored, and knew then and there that the decisions weve made for him academically have paid off, and also that this kid is a little dangerous. He made a great point that he cant go out on a field and play football because of his vision impairment, and that he cant go out on a court and play basketball, but that wrestling is one sport that he can actively participate, where being blind isnt a disability, where he gains a sense of normalcy.
