I always found it fascinating that New York State ratified the Constitution here in Dutchess County so I snapped this picture of the plaque the other day while walking past that historic spot at the corner of Market St and Main St in the City of Poughkeepsie where the County Court House stands. The painting of that event currently hangs in the Poughkeesie Post Office. Participants included Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Robert Livingstin, George Clinton and resident of todays Fighting 105th Assembly District Jacobus Swartwout whose house still stands on All Angels Hill Rd in the Town of Wappinger not far from Rte 82. And by the way, ratification almost didnt happen. The vote was only 30-27 in favor of ratification. A few votes the other way, and Pougkeepsie might have been the scene of the demise of the US Constitution. For more info: teachingamericanhistory.org/ratification/newyork/
