I always had an idea that the peace process was never a negotiation between two monolithic sides (government and rebels, as crude binary logic would put it). However, I never realized just how factionalized and tribalized (for lack of a better term) things were on the ground until this happened. At the very least, it seems like the PNPs Special Action Forces (SAF) from Manila, the Armed Forces of the Philippines, the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) were all acting independently, regardless of standing ceasefire terms. Its the kind of intrigue that would be gripping in a Song of Ice And Fire context, but is absolutely heartbreaking when it happens in the real world.
