I always have people ask me, how do firefighters deal with death. - TopicsExpress

I always have people ask me, how do firefighters deal with death. Maybe its the fact that Ive been at this so long, or maybe its the fact I can give perspective. Yesterday I talked with a Mother who lost her older child, in an accident. A complete stranger, who saw my jacket, and struck up a conversation, in a checkout line. Our department didnt work his accident, but she wanted to know, what Ive been a witness to, over the years. How is death normally handled. She wanted to know, was her Son left alone. I could tell grief was strong, and she needed to talk. I was busy but none of that mattered, at that moment. After talking with her, I came back and wrote. If your family member has been in a vehicle accident, and passed away, these are things you may need to know. Those people that assisted your Grandparent, Parent, Son, Daughter, Nephew, Niece, Cousin, or other relative, cared. Whether they were firefighters, police officers, or EMTs, they respected the person you love. They cared enough that they talked to them, even while they were unconscious. They tried very hard, to bring your loved one back to you. They did everything they were trained to do, and wanted a miracle. They stayed with him/her and didnt leave their side. They made your family member as comfortable as possible. They silently grieved for your family members death, before you even knew. They walked up to the car prepared for the worst, hoping for the best, saying a silent prayer. They covered him or her to keep their dignity in tact, if necessary. They made bystanders leave, and blocked them from seeing your loved one. They put themselves, in your position, and they put themselves in your loved ones position. Your loss, is their loss. They didnt forget you or your family member. He or she isnt a just a number to us. Its a loss we carry. Your loved one mattered to us.
