I always like to appreciate people who do something to change lives. I know how poverty pains because it is there where I have spent majority of my life. I dont mean that now I have beaten poverty but what I mean is now I am experiencing poverty at a different level where I can complain about life but in the evening I know there is nsima and beans waiting for me. Now that I experience this poverty at different level my life has been always about those who are in what we call abject poverty. Abject poverty means you literally have nothing to call your own . We are talking about no food / no guarantee of where your next meal will come from, no clothing and men and women despite their farming efforts have nothing by the end of the day. These are people when sick and when their kids are ill you know there is no chance to go to a private hospital and even going to a hospital is next to impossible because they have no transport. We have so many of them and as a society we are duty bound to care for another. That is why when we have organisations like UNICEF, ACTION AID, NAC I have full trust they are fulfilling my wishes to beat poverty. But I always had doubts about the naming and launching of a charity Beautify Malawi whose aim I heard was to sweep streets. I asked myself several times. If I am given an opportunity to change lives would I be sweeping the streets to make my country cleaner while people are dying of hunger and lack of medicine? I just shook my head and clasped my hand that maybe I was too judgemental. Suddenly I saw the Vice President, the president and the First Lady wearing blue overalls sweeping Lilongwe. I looked forward to the day they will sweep Blantyre, Mzuzu and Karonga because to me these guys meant business. But to my surprise the First Lady went to USA and on her return there was a big announcement her Beautify Malawi accepted a gift of a two seater plane. Now this was strange news to me as I wondered how would a two SEATER plane help sweep the streets? My mouth remained open failing to find answers. Because since I was young I have known of charities to help the poor but none of them acquired a jet. In less than a month after returning from USA First Lady made a speech that, I started Beautify Malawi to help the poor, in my home I saw a boy not able to go to school, I was so touched. The more I listened the more I asked myself why is she confusing people. She started BEAM to sweep the streets and now she is talking about helping the poor where is the connection? I just clasped my hands. I now look back, I realise First Lady made that speech when NAC, MACRA, ESCOM were being forced to hand her money or bosses would face firing. I look at it with tears in my heart, people are suffering constant blackouts and many are in need of medicine to prolong their lives and the best a First Lady and her husband can do is force a donation to use money lavishly? People may think I have personal issues against the First Lady and her husband but as much as I wished Mutharika well on the day he was sworn I didnt mean to support this thievery and looting of public resources to fund their extravagant lifestyle while Malawians are complaining of poor pay, rise in costs of things, inflation. This is a mockery or a slap to the poor people who wake up each day hoping for a better life. Thats why I have no trust in this government given the naked corruption.
