I always relate food to people and incidents. This person liked this. We had that when that happened. Memories! Some bring happiness, some make me sad :( My dad was quite a simple man! Seedha saada rehne ka Seedha saada khane ka :) Initially he liked non veg (read chicken tikka or boneless butter chicken ;) ). But as he grew older (not very also, what, he passed away only at the age of 57), he turned more towards our Gujju food. And he was particular about mealtimes, like Khan Saab, and unlike me :p He would ideally want his dinner served by 8. At times we all would dilly dally till the last minute, and then rush. Mom would go, ab jaldi karo. Rupal, tu lot baandhi ne bhakhri karva maand (Rupal, you make the dough and start making bhakhri). Tinoo, jaldi kar. Table set kari de (Tinoo, quickly set the table). Then she would open the fridge to see what were the options. And more often than not, she would whip up this quick sabzi, which was light, healthy, and Dads favourite :) Today, I was in the same situation. Had missed the Quran class. Got home a little dejected. Had made kadhi in the morning itself (the whole world knows ;) ), and had a lot of leftover rice. Freezer mein teen chicken kabab kabse wait kar rahe the ki koi unhe khaye! The girls, I knew, would have milk and stuff when they get up. But mera kya? Mein kya khati?? And I saw this cabbage in the fridge, with an absolute Pick me up! look! So fatafat bana diya - Cabbage, capsicum, onion and carrot ki sabzi. Taste and colour were so exact, just as mom used to make it, and as I ate it, I was transported back to when I was 16-18. Dad would have loved it! I dont know which feeling weighs more. Am I happy that I made it so quick, and exact. Or sad, because I really missed Dad!! Anyway, log bhi apne the, yaadein bhi, aur yeh happy and sad feelings bhi! Memories!! :( Jeena issi ko kehte hai, shayad! Lunch today Pyaaz ki Kadhi, cabbage, capsicum, onion and carrots stir fry, khubz (Arabic flat bread that we get here, store bought) and rice!
