I always viewed Betty Ford as this big black box. I had the privilege of participating in the last session of the SIMS program, so imagine my curiosity when I saw people walk into this black box where magic would happen for 5 days, and then I saw the medical student leave as a changed human being (as recorded on Facebook). Being a realist, I couldn’t understand how someone could be changed in five days. Today I am a believer. I can honestly say that Betty Ford has changed my life both personally and professionally as a future physician. I will never be away to erase some of the stories of recovery that I heard or the emotions that bubbled up in small group. Because of Betty Ford I see addiction as a disease and most importantly a disease that robs it’s victims of the awareness that they have the disease (imagine treating a disease where the patient doesn’t even acknowledge that they are sick)!!! Now I feel confident in my ability to create a personalized treatment plan for my patient. Also, I now have a better understanding of addiction medicine in light of healthcare professionals. This was whirlwind week of emotions but I left with an entirely new perspective and an awesome group of friends from various medical schools across the country. Thank you Betty Ford for this once-in-a lifetime experience. I will be sure to spread the knowledge and be a catalyst for changing physicians perspectives of addicts.
