I always wonder, where are the black females? Former Richards Associate Principal (shes now associate principal at Shepard) MaLinda Majoch asked this question -- in reference to observing that Advanced Placement or Honors courses often feature just a couple of African-American girls -- during our recent panel discussion. In many cases, the issue is simply a mental hurdle: The willingness to embrace academic challenge and to have confidence in their own intellect. I know that youre incredibly bright, she added as a quick follow-up to stress that many more students (than currently enrolled in A.P. and Honors courses) possess the ability to prosper in our most challenging classes. Aside from the students responses to Mrs. Majochs question, this video also features students discussing their role models and how they feel when someone says youre cute to be so smart.
