I am a Cinefile (obsession with movies). *cue Michael Bolton * https://youtube/watch?v=GI6CfKcMhjY Some people actually think I hate movies - especially since I tend to spend most of my time when talking about movies mostly talking about what is wrong. The truth is I actually love movies - even the bad ones. I have my list of 10 movies that are my go to movies, basically I will sit and watch if ever they are playing. I a sucker for quoting lines and tend to quote most movies all the time, almost mixing and blending the lines together to have whole conversations based solely from quotes from different movies. I tend to not hang in there as long as I would like, but it is certainly fun to do. So why would anyone think I hate movies, well most movies I tend to dismiss because the filming is done horribly, the script seems like it was written by a 9 year old, the special effect look so bad it breaks me out of my movie trance, the pacing is clumsy, and most of all plot holes ruining my suspension of disbelief. Movies are (to me at least) a magic trick, using exposition to bring me in and hold my attention to the point of being music with visual images, they play almost like the Pied Piper of Hamelin luring me away from reality and bringing me into a world. If the music breaks for example: the script not being the thread holding everything together, - Im casted out of the world and can never return. It could be something as simple as an actor running into the back drop, the editor failing to splice the music properly to the scene. Over the years, there has only been one movie to succeed this Jacobs Ladder a movie that cant lose a single frame and up until now every viewing changed to become something else depending on the feelings I had before watching it. it hits every genre (except a western) and holds true to each one of its genres without slipping into another. You want a drama, biblical, comedy, horror, war film, psychological thrillers, love story, family film, and even an unreliable main character its all there waiting to be seen. Big Fish comes very close, if you dont watch the very end - but even then there are plot holes and loose ends not tied up, its close but not close enough. This doesnt stop me from crying like a little baby every time I see it, even though I already should brace myself for what should have been the end of the film (Ive watched it over a hundred times). Jacobs Ladder is by far a masterpiece in my mind and one day I will make a film that does exactly that and goes even further - That is my dream, that my masterpiece will become (even if it is to a single person) what Jacobs Ladder is to me. I know movies very well, I usually guess twist or surprise endings and even knowing this, if I can find that Im welcomed into the world and once there it will sustain me until the movie is over - without me cringing anytime, falling asleep, or walking away from it, even if it is to pee. It will bump the number 10 from the list and basically become one of my 10 greats. It doesnt take much actually if someone where to make another flawless film it will easily become number 2. The number 1 spot, is a feat that I continually dare film makers to make - but even the few greats seem to rise to the challenge and fall like Icarus for getting too close to greatness.
