I am a big fan of Indian democracy. As we all know-the beauty of democracy is- it lets people choose their own government. And the risk is- they can choose a stupid one. But one has to live with this risk. We are surounded by India geographically, economically, culturally, and psychologically. There is no denying the fact. So it is obvious that one would like to study Indian election. I am no exception and learnt some lessons: 1) You can not sell the idea of keeping religious extremists at bay for long. To keep the extremists out of power, you actually need to offer good governance. 2) India believes they can have a religious extremists force in power but Bangladesh should not have one. Food for amusement: I wonder what made Hindu extremism better than Islamic extremism. Before our dramatic election on 5th January, I remember lot of Indian officials were flying in and flying out everyday. The Indian foreign secretary categorically mentioned that they dont want to see Islamist extremists in power. (Though in reality Jamaat e Islami is not capable of coming to power on their own). Like him, we too dont want to see extremists grab BD power. But hello, before preaching others, must you not make sure your house is in right order? Did our ambassador to India meet the Indian leaders and government officials and tell them listen we dont want to see Hindu extremists in power? Will they ever allow us talk like that? ;-)
