I am a citizen of the Edgewood School District and I have a very heavy heart this morning. I just read in the Journal News that the Edgewood School Board is allowing, indeed encouraging, the administrators to carry guns. Was the community consulted about this radical step from tradition? Absolutely not! The members of the school board were elected to represent me, my family and my neighbors. We want school administrators who are caring, who can reach out and talk to students, especially troubled students. Do they need a gun to do this? School administrators should be spending these last days before the next school year starts working with teachers to create a welcoming,nourishing and academically challenging environment in our schools. They should not be spending their precious time learning how to carry a loaded firearm -- in school! Any loaded gun in school is just that -- a loaded gun, and a potential lethal threat to our young children. Board members, stand up and defend our school district, our teachers, and our children. Reverse this decision immediately.
