I am a former Bangorian (is that the correct word?) who has lived in the Phoenix, AZ. area for many years. A friend and I were hanging out in Scottsdale, AZ. yesterday in the Fashion Square Mall, observing all the hoopla about the Super Bowl Game, Patriots vs. Sea Chickens---oops---Hawks. To my delight I saw Patriot tees for sale, manufactured by Majestic Athletics in Bangor, Pennsylvania. My delight turned to dismay as I scrutinized the labels and saw MADE IN CHINA. I remembered my parents and many other family members who owned, managed and worked in the flourishing Slate Belt garment industry in the 50’s. Previously from, her home in the 1930’s before labor laws prevented, my grandmother toiled on her foot pedal Singer sewing machine. She could work out of her home, have lunch ready for her school age young ones, my Dad and his sisters, and take care of her smallest child, my uncle. Later in the ‘60’s I worked for a couple years as a button sewer for my Aunt before going off to college in the West. I remember the ILGWU labels MADE IN THE USA, proudly stitched into the fabric of those blouses. This is just a thought, no treatise on the sad state of the world and US economy. Just a small, fragile whisper of a memory from a time gone by.
