I am a member of the Scottish Society of NZ here in Christchurch and currentky doing a lot of research which means going through all the old cupboards full of interesting antiquity and as such came across a poetry book Poems by an Ayrshire Scot, Hugh Smith Reefton NZ 1932 and included is one of his poems Sunset at Karamea, West Coast which I think needs sharing on this page; I stood on Karamea beach, And lookd on a scene so grand; The sun was sinking in the west, As twere thro a golden strand. And clouds were spread like scarlet cloaks Across the azure sky, And golden lava seemd to flow From crimson peaks on high. From north to south, tween sea and stars, Were countless lakes of blue, And far extending plains of gold Lay in the tranquil view. With every fleeting moment came A changing scene so grand, Till Sol had sunk low in the west, Beneath the golden strand. And oer the sombre hills there passd A radiance red and bright, That peepd in to the deep, dark shades, The seeming home of night. To see the changful scenes of gold, Is never to forget A thousand beauties when the sun At Karamea set. Hugh comments: one beautiful summer evening, during a visit to Dr Bell, at Karamea his good lady called me out to see what was often mentioned as the Karamea sunset, and it excelled anything of the kind I had ever seen. As for me I vividly recall the sunset as seen through the cow bail doors at Georges, they were magic.
