I am a middle class suburban white guy who grew up in a middle - TopicsExpress

I am a middle class suburban white guy who grew up in a middle class suburban white family, married a nice white girl and have a middle class suburban white daughter married to a middle class suburban white guy and they are raising a white daughter who will in all probability turn out to be middle class and suburban. I have reasonable powers of empathy, but nothing in my life experience equips me to really understand the horror of having a child gunned down in the street by a cop of another race and to have the feeling that, for my family, society does not demand accountability. Of course that white cop does not get off scott free. His life will doubtless be altered for the worse by that brief instant of terror and lapsed judgment on the street in Ferguson. But reason seems to dictate that there should be some kind of accountability imposed by a civil society. I wasnt there, I dont know what happened that led to the shooting, and I am ill equipped to judge. But it strikes me that if there is any possible way that the authorities down there could have screwed things up worse, it escapes me.
