I am a nurse. I entered this profession with unknown expectations, maybe a small hope of making a difference each day. I am a nurse, I go to work each day, sometimes with fear and trepidation, some even wishing I’d called out - but mostly gladness that I had chosen to follow the path of providing care for people during some of the most difficult times in their lives. I am a nurse, I make mistakes, but I’m always learning. I am a nurse, and sometimes I get yelled at by doctors, charge nurses, supervisors, nurse managers, patients, families, transporters - but I have an open mind, and an ongoing understanding that this is a delicate environment, and I’ve learned to develop a thicker skin, for the care of my patients supersedes any pride I may have. I am a nurse, I’m on the frontline of patient care, I sometimes get a variety of human excrement all over me without warning, but I also get to hold a newborn in their first moments on this earth, and sometimes I hold the hand of a dying patient during the last moments of their life, helping them keep their dignity. I am a nurse, I’m at the bottom of the food chain, and while I did not go into this profession for the thanks, recognition, or praise - I am thankful for all my colleagues, and future nurses for keeping this profession alive here at home, and all over the world, and making what seems like a small difference each day a very large impact in the lives of our patients.
