I am a political animal, though I know this may not be the place for politics. But there are national diseases, and endemic racism is one we wrestle with and gun violence is another. Racism has a long history worldwide, and I fear will have a longer one still until we are finally cured of it. I see it in my professional life as a dissector: race is literally only skin deep; when the skin is off, it is impossible to tell what race you are working on. Only the humanity is visible - fragile and strong. But gun violence is a national choice of recent origin. Fly the second amendment all you want, we can still make the choice - as so many other countries have - simply to make gun violence so distasteful that its very presence is abhorred - like smoking in planes, or throwing your trash out the car window or caning children, all of which were commonplaces when I was young. Other countries - multi-racial, complex societies - make it work. We could. Here’s the stark contrast in one paragraph, one statistic:
