I am a recovered religion addict. Whether or not there is an afterlife should have no bearing on the desire to live fully connected and thoughtfully actualized in the present. We are alive we effect the world around us in the here and now. We should desire to be as ethical, understanding and caring as we can towards ourselves and other life. We are all in this life together, thus we actively work to make it better, equal and free; brighter, more wisdom and love; bigger, seeing us all as one human race and presenting a higher empathizing for all life. You can find lots of ways to disprove the Bible and Jesus but a easy one is the statement if you only have the faith of a mustard seed you can move mountains. (Matthew 17:20) What nonsense even if you have the faith of a mountain you cannot make a mustard seed move. My religion addiction sober date is around August 2006. I did not call myself an atheist right away because stepping away from a life of religious thinking made me not sure what was real. It has been a long recovery process to ratchet dogma and find clean truth. Be happy, joyous, and free. The loss of delusions or illusions is not easy. It creates a vacuum of questioning and a need for some lifeline of thinking to hold on to because one can feel like they are drowning without a firm concept to stand one. So what may happen when religion assurance is removed, some drift, some go back and relapse, some grasp for any other addiction to take its place, and others search deeper in the before unknown sobriety. I longed for truth and the more I learned the more atheism seemed the only real choice and assurance for sobriety. It was hard to take and it seemed I would have to leave my old world behind. The comfort of christian family, friends, and the larger judeo-christian society at large. But I had to reach for a full recovery and finally be religious free; no longer a religion addict. If you are a current religion believer, please get the help, support, and recover you need. There is hope no matter how far from reality you have gone. We of atheism lovingly await to welcome you in your new sober life without faith dogmas.
