I am a registered nurse. My wife is an immunologist. We have many friends in the health industry. One of the more frequent topics of conversation we participate in each year as Fall approaches is vaccinations. This is my rant about vaccines every year and my wifes opinion mirrors my own. Lets be careful with vaccines. I am for most vaccinations. I find mandatory vaccination for chickenpox, the flu and a few other infections to be ridiculous. I am not saying these vaccines are bad but more that they should be administered to those at high risk. The flu shot has become a money grab industry. The fear mongers that make these vaccines have sold the major governments, physicians and the average Joe on mass inoculation. This vaccine only works for the 2 major strains of the previous year and only 60% of the vaccinated do not get the flu. Getting vaccinated for the flu does not mean you cannot spread it by contact. Wash your hands and do not touch your face(grandmas wisdom). Lets remember folks that this is the flu, meaning if your healthy, your body is more then equipped to handle it. As for chickenpox vaccination, I remain apprehensive to the long term effects and find it again unnecessary if the infected are properly treated. The majority of the deaths from varicella in Canada occur in people over the age of 15 who did not receive antivirals or did to late. I believe we are better off focusing our energies and monies in vaccine research for more life threatening infections such as HIV or the Ebola virus. The next thing you know we will be vaccinating for hand, foot and mouth disease. Be smart and educate yourself with true knowledge and not the ramblings of idiots and snake oil salesman.
