I am a vegetable advocate. Not a fruit praiser. Here are some of my personal reasons: 1. A medium apple contains almost 100 kcals. It has almost zero protein or fat. ALL those kcals come from carbs. 75% of the carbs are sugar, the rest fiber. The apple has almost no calcium. It has almost 200 mg potassium. Now, compare that to the vegetable Broccoli: Same weight as the apple (6.3 oz) gives you 61 kcals, but the carbs are 25% sugar, the rest fiber. It has 5 grams protein. 83 mg calcium and 564 mg potassium. Remember the bananas for potassium propaganda? well, to get the equivalent amount of potassium from banana as you get from broccoli you end up with about 150 calories and about 40 grams of carbs of which 50% are simple sugar. Conclusion: you end up with a lot of sugar compared to not eating fruit. 2. If you tell a person to eat fruit or veggies guess what theyll choose? FRUIT. Because its sweet. What happens? Overconsumption. No fat loss. 3. Its NOT a balanced meal. If you want to lose fat and build muscle, you need protein more than you need sugar from fruit. 4. Theyre not filling. I get 2-3 more food volume wise than for fruit. Very important when you want to cut body fat. 5. Theyre NEVER as nutritious as vegetables. 6. If you dry fruit you end up with very sweet energy rich stuff. Thats what youre eating in a diluted form. Try that with vegetables and it doesnt ever come close. Do I think fruit has its place? Sure. For kids. For those who need simple sugars to fuel their insane workout program. Can fruit be part of a healthy diet? Of course it can. But I know the pitfalls people make when trying to lose fat and IME fruit is very often a wolf sneaking around as a lamb! :-)
