I am about to rant for a few minutes. You won’t like me much if you read this, so don’t read it or do read it. I’m getting it off my chest. If one child deserves to have her wildest dreams come true, then all children do. Why should the little girl fighting cancer get so much attention, gifts, and love lavished upon her than rosy-cheeked child is ignored? The sick child has obvious struggles. But who among us doesn’t suffer? The rosy-cheeked child is being molested by her uncle. The tow-headed little boy is hoping to get a meal today. That little girl from the comfortable loving family is being bullied at school. Pushing aside the little girl who worked her healthy buns off to raise money for cancer research while you honor the sick child is cruel. I have seen it done. That healthy child raised more money than anyone else and she sat on the sidelines her applauding her cancer-stricken friend. She felt so ignored and unloved she found her way to some pretty dangerous behaviors to get the attention she so desperately wanted. Giving special treatment to the child with the muscle disease doesn’t show him love, it shows him pity. I bet he would prefer to hang out with the rest of the kids instead. I bet he’s prefer to be given the same treatment as his friends than meet the celebrity only because of his limitations. Because your wounds are not apparent, doesn’t mean they do not exist. Just as giving special attention the adorable olive skinned long-lashed child and ignoring the skinny pale mouse colored hair child is wrong, the reverse is as well. I will treat you no differently whether you use a wheelchair, are sick from your chemo, can afford caviar or are trying to scrape enough money together to buy a beer so you won’t be sick. I will do my best to love you regardless if your effort, trials, and sufferings are visible. I will know that even if your life appears perfect you still desire kindness and love. I will do my best to lavish love on you simply because you are.
