I am adding some Group Guitar lessons to my schedule starting in February. Two at Cascade School of Music and I just secured a contract with Bend-La Pine Schools to teach an after school Group Guitar class in LaPine on early release Wednesday. For the last few days I have been creating a lesson plan/syllabus. As I write them up I get excited to see the students reach each weeks accomplishment. I structure each week with both challenging tasks that could take several weeks to get the hang of and simpler tasks that not only add playing skills but also enforce the self esteem that comes from success. I feel that if each week students feel their own positive progress from some fun, simpler group skills they will go home with an energized attitude needed to tackle the tougher skills on their own. The group class format is new to me (I have had 2 or 3 students, often siblings, at one time before but not following a class based format) so I hope my vision of how this will go comes to fruition. I have really just applied what has worked for me in individual lessons to a group method. I am leaving myself plenty of secondary options, safety nets and a few Hail Marys just in case. :) For a guy who NEVER thought he would be a teacher I sure am enjoying this process. Wish me luck!
