I am almost inclined to set it up as a canon that a children’s story which is enjoyed only by children is a bad children’s story. The good ones last. A waltz which you can like only when you are waltzing is a bad waltz. When I became a man, I put away childish things, including my fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up - C. S. LEWIS The stories we read as children were often magical and fanciful, but never true. They were the stories of children, with fairies, the lost boys, pirates, and ticking crocodiles, magic and spells, giants and golden egg laying geese. We read these stories of awe and wonder in the same way we read about Noah, Samson, David and Goliath, and Jesus being born in a manger. They were nice stories with the same magic as the other stories we read and so we grow up and relegate them to simple childrens stories and the bible then a book of fables and tales. Bedtime stories. Fables at best, and so the bible becomes neutered of power, and truth and meaning. Our parents lied to us. These stories were meant for bedtime like fire is meant as a play thing. These stories of Noah and Samson, David and Jesus are raw and bloody, powerful and true. Full of naked drunk people, suffering, violence and pain. They are stories of betrayal, children being murdered and a hope rising greater than you could ever imagine. More than that they are incredibly important stories for understanding who we are and who God is. They are important (to miss-quote Lewis) As the sun is important, not because I can see it but because by it I see everything else. Not only are they true, they are about the most true and real thing you will ever know. So that like a salve to blind eyes, by them you will be able to see perhaps for the first time fully. Bed time stories is a White Horse Church Christmas series about the bedtime stories we loved, that turned out to not be bedtime stories at all.
