I am also reading several books on fossil wood full of gorgeous pictures. Growing up in a botanical home with a great interest in fossils, I have had more than a passing interest in paleobotany since I was child. When I was working at the Four Aces claim in the White Canyon Desert of south eastern Utah, all our roads were in the soft Chinle shale. This is the formation containing the Petrified Forest National Park. I first visited there in 1949. I think it was only a National Monument then and I know there were miles and miles of roads through ares littered with enormous numbers of fossil trees out side of any protected area. I suppose there are laws against collecting now. I do have many of the original books and articles from the middle and second half of the Nineteenth Century on American paleobotany.
