I am always deeply impressed by the ability of people who run businesses to get behind a good cause. Manufacturing these days is challenging - but countless times I have approached business owners for help on a project and have always been met with enthusiasm and generosity. As previously posted here, in April 2013 I travelled to Timor-Leste under my own resources on a fact-finding mission. While in there, I visited an orphanage at Maubara, about 30 km west of Dili. This orphanage is home to around 30 girls from the ages of six to 15. I was confronted by the state of the orphanage kitchen and promised to return to help them out. Ballarat company JB Cameron (Vic) heard about this and donated almost $5,000 worth of steel to the project. Another Ballarat company, Plinius Engineering, offered to process and fabricate the kitchen for free before it is shipped up to Timor and erected early next year. Melbourne company Keables Pty Ltd have supplied all the bolts and fasteners for free. And last week the steel was hot-dip galvanised by Kingfield Galvanizing in Campbellfield. This process will protect the metal from rusting in the tough Timor climate.
