I am amazed and amused that some people, including a political party, have started accusing DPT of joining hands with PDP to push through the controversial pay revision. Let me say that nothing is further than the truth as far as we are concerned. Our ideologies, in contrast to to those of some other parties, are poles apart and the two shall never converge, nor collude, nor conspire nor enter into a marriage of convenience. However, we will not undermine the functioning of an elected government regardless of our differences. Having served as the first government, we know first hand, how challenging it is to please every one. We have always maintained that we will play a constructive role - opposing and challenging the governments policies and decisions whenever needed but in the right place and at the right time. If after doing so, does not bring in the desired outcome, then we have to let the government of the day to govern. After all, for better or worse, good or bad, they are elected by the people and handed the mandate to take responsible decisions, and be accountable for them. Even us, as the opposition party in parliament, we have to abide by this fundamental principle of democratic governance. Therefore, let me clarify that we had neither entered into a pact or agreement with the government to pass the pay revision report or bill ( a contested status between NC and the government as it stands now). We have stated our position repeatedly to the extent that we have been given the floor by the speaker and we have voted on the basis of our own assessment and appreciation of the situation but we simply dont have the numbers to determine the outcome - that power lies with the ruling party, the PDP. Let me reiterate once again that we will await the ruling on the legal status of the pay revision and then decide on whether to go along with the NCs resolution or not. However, let me also categorically state here that we will not use this issue as a political opportunity to hamper the functioning of the government or the parliament. This would not be in any ones interest, let alone the nations.
