I am amused by the allegation that in my Chicago Tribune article from last fall I was biased towards finding that excess body fat (specifically if its centrally located) is unhealthy because it would be bad for my business model if it was found to be just peachy. Question: When you consider just how much society shames the obese, and how much value it places on being thin, do you really think Id lose any readers / sell fewer books if it was found that being obese didnt come with health consequences? There are no end of people who Just want to fit into that little black dress or Go down a size or Rock that bikini or Be able to see my abs. Trust me, if some pill is invented that undoes all the negative health consequences of obesity, Ill still be awash in customers. And here is the reality of my feelings on how I approached that article. I didnt want to learn what I learned. I wanted the evidence to point me in the other direction. I wanted the health consequences of body fat to be overblown. I mean, what kind of sadistic bastard would wish otherwise? Heh, serves ya right ya damn fatties. Thatll teach ya for being lazy gluttons. Some people think that way. I dont. A number of people I love dearly are obese. Dont you think I would have been thrilled to learn that their excess body fat isnt harmful to their health? Dont you think my mind wanted that to be true for their sakes? But its not true, and I had to tell it like it is, because thats what I do. And now Im sure some ideologically entrenched HAES advocate is going to make a big deal out of this next statement, but Im going to make it anyway, because I do care.
