I am an album guy. If you have a couple nice tracks, good for you, but Im always hungry for the long form. When that little survey of Top Ten Albums That Have Stuck With You started going around, I bit my lip and abstained. Then a friend invited me to try, so yeah, okay, Ill bite. I didnt keep it to 10 albums. In fact, I think I ended just answering the question: As fast as you can, list all of the records that helped shaped you into the person you are today. Doesnt matter if you regret them now or if you cant remember why you even enjoyed them. List em. Get judged to shit. So here is a free-associative list of albums that shaped me or at least matter(ed) to me: Benji Hughes _ A Love Extreme Evening - Other Victorians Thurston Moore - Trees Outside the Academy DAngelo - Voodoo Andre 3000 - The Love Below Dungen - Ta Det Lugnt Gorillaz - Demon Days Shuggie Otis - Inspiration Information Lonnie Liston Smith - Cosmic Funk Little Dragon - Little Dragon Marvin Gaye - Trouble Man OST The Shins - Oh, Inverted World Blood Brothers - Crimes Radiohead - Kid A My Morning Jacket - Z Deerhunter - Fluorescent Grey The soundtrack to Jacobs Ladder Toro y Moi - Causers of This QOTSA - Songs for the Deaf Roy Ayers - Everybody Loves the Sunshine Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun Steely Dan - Cant Buy a Thrill Richard Swift - Dressed Up for the Letdown Stevie Wonder - Innervisions Flying Lotus - Cosmogramma At the Drive-In - Vaya Aaliyah - Age Aint Nothin But A Number Glassjaw - Worship and Tribute J Dilla - The Shining The Bees - Octopus Fleetwood Mac - Rumours Aphex Twin - Come to Daddy Caribou - Swim Bob Dylan - The Freewheelin Bob Dylan The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Anita Baker - Rapture Fabio Frizzi - Zombi 2 OST Califone - Roots & Crowns Deftones - Around the Fur ODB - Return to the 36 Chambers Tom Waits - Bone Machine Danzig - Lucifuge Prince - Batman OST Boyz II Men - that double-disc greatest hits collection Massive Attack - Mezzanine Curtis Mayfield - Superfly OST Erykah Badu - Baduizm Tosca Tango Orchestra - Waking Life OST Skeriks Syncopated Taint Septet - Husky Ginuwine - The Bachelor The Knife - Silent Shout Death From Above, 1979 - Youre a Woman, Im a Machine The Doctor Doolittle Soundtrack Can - Ege Bamyasi The X-Files opening credits DJ Shadow - Endtroducing Bilal - 1st Born Second Midlake - Banman & Slivercork Led Zeppelin - The Early/Latter Days Screaming Trees - Dust Doves - Some Cities Romeo and Juliet Soundtrack Rilo Kiley - The Execution of All Things Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - The Lyre of Orpheus Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets Blitzen Trapper - Rexx Sa-Ra Creative Partners - whatever mix they made for their fake radio show Paul McCartney - Chaos and Creation in the Backyard David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust The sweet near-acid-jazz of Donkey Kong Country, Earthworm Jim, Sonic and Road Rash on the Sega Genesis. Oh, and countless adolescent evenings of listening to late night DJ mixes on Hot 104.7. I tried to keep the new ones out, as I dont think super into at the moment qualifies as formative. But a few slipped in anyways. Judge away.
