I am asking everyone to support Justice Karmeier’s campaign to be retained for another term as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Illinois. Over the past ten years, Justice Karmeier has improved the integrity and quality of the court system in southern Illinois. Unfortunately, those efforts now face a dire and growing threat from a well-financed, last minute attack campaign by a small group of lawyers from St. Louis, Chicago and South Carolina. These out-of-state lawyers have already invested over $1.3 million dollars to try to unseat Justice Karmeier. By next Tuesday, that amount is likely to exceed $2 million. The attacks are untrue and outrageous and are motivated by only one thing: money. Removing Justice Karmeier from the Court will allow these lawyers to recover approximately $1.7 billion, that’s billion with a “b”, in legal fees from the pending case. It is a shocking and outrageous maneuver that will do permanent damage to the independence of the judicial system. The Illinois State Bar Association has recommended Justice Karmeier’s retention, as have the Fraternal Order of Police, the Illinois Education Association, the Illinois Civil Justice League, the Belleville News Democrat and a range of other groups and organizations. What will really make the difference on Nov. 4th, however, is the support of people who are respected in their communities, who are committed to the independence and integrity of the court system, and who will help get the word out to their friends, families and everyone they know: vote YES to retain Karmeier.
