I am beginning to think that kids would get a better education - TopicsExpress

I am beginning to think that kids would get a better education were schooling not compulsory. Some of the worlds greatest minds / inventors / innovators didnt finish school, or didnt even go to school (as we currently define it). The incredible Sir Ken Robinson believes something similar, in that modern schooling is completely archaic and focuses on passing kids instead of educating kids. He argues that schooling is geared towards pushing through as many pupils as possible, something akin to Pink Floyds meat grinder animation (going in as individuals one end, coming out as a collective mess the other end). If too many pupils fail, the classes get too full, leading to schools lowering the pass mark so that more kids can move to the next grade. He further argues that education should be calibrated to each pupil, and that pupils should be grouped according to their skills rather than their age. (Because kids learn at different speeds.) Perhaps better schooling is not about more (quality) teachers parroting a government-approved syllabus for 12 years, but rather about calibrating relevant and meaningful education to each child (for however many years, depending on the childs abilities). Sir Ken Robinson has said that schooling shouldnt be reformed; it should be completely revolutionised. I think hes right.
