I am beyond disgusted right now. Its been 50 years since the Civil Rights Act outlawed racial discrimination, 150 since the Thirteenth Amendment abolished slavery, and 228 years since the Declaration of Independence asserted that all men are created equal. And yet even today, a white policeman can strangle another human being to death with his bare hands, for no greater offense than selling cigarettes without a permit, without facing even a faint pretense of justice so long as the victim happened to have dark skin? I grew up in the animal rights movement, cherishing the ideal of compassion for all living creatures, and believing its attainment was the inevitable culmination of the progress human civilization had made. But how can there be any hope for animal rights, or any other social cause seeking to broaden the circle of justice and compassion, when after 228 years a nation founded on equality between human beings cant even end violent institutional racism? If were ever going to change anything for the better, wed better f*cking get our sh*t together and start NOW before its too late, before one or more of the many self-inflicted apocalypses predicted by scientists come true and give our species the fate it presently deserves.
