I am continuing to look up the Old Testament passages quoted from in the New Testament. I am still being fascinated at how well the whole chapters usually open your eyes to the place where they were quoted. ~♥~Matthew 9:9- •✿NRSV❀ 9 As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, Follow me. And he got up and followed him. 10 And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?12 But when he heard this, he said, Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 13 Go and learn what this means, I desire mercy, not sacrifice. For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners. ✟Ƹ̴Ӂ̴Ʒ ❀ He went places & associated with people who they censured Him for being with, but He explained this is where the sinners are & they are who He came to save. The people speaking to Him need saved too, but they are too proud to admit to themselves or believe. Jesus answered them when they questioned His being with sinners with a quote from~♥~ Hosea 6:6 For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.✿❀The whole passage fascinated me when I looked this verse He quoted up. God speaks of to Israel through the whole history both rebuking them for turning from Him, pleading for their return & promising & warning, because those who come back are forgiven & blessed or rewarded. Those who refuse are chastised to try to get them to return. Jesus is trying here to remind them of this constant theme of God. He is eating with those who are needing to return, but who giving that idea consideration or who have accepted & returned. They can find forgiveness. He is speaking to those who need to repent as well, but are too self~righteous to even realize the need. And have no mercy for these sinners, no desire to see them saved. Those who do not extend mercy do not receive it.✿❀ It is worth reading all of Hosea 6, but I will not quote it all here as I did in my own notes. I will just add Samuel s answer to King Saul. ~♥~1 Samuel 15:22 But Samuel replied: Does the LORD delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the voice of the LORD? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, he has rejected you as king.✿❀
