I am convinced, as I think about Mark Driscoll and others, that pastors need accountability. We dont need to be above criticism, and we sure do not need to be without any godly resistance. This is why a plurality of elders is important. Elders must submit themselves to each other. And even the best of preachers are not irreplaceable. God does not need any one of us. I am also convinced that churches are not made for pastors but pastors are made for churches. If we get this wrong, we cannot help but be in the ministry for self-promotion rather than for the glory of God and the care of his sheep. May we all seek humility by not thinking too highly of ourselves.
