I am curious if there exists a belief that religion, as it existed - TopicsExpress

I am curious if there exists a belief that religion, as it existed during the colonies, was as uniform and as accepted as it is now. Or, err, as certain people would like to think it would be. Im looking at you, revisionists. The whole Deists thing aside, I heard a fun fact today. Thomas Paine (the guy who wrote COMMON SENSE and pissed off the British) had only a handful of people attend his funeral, cause he talked a lot of shit about Christianity. And this is why history is fun. Its always neat to be reminded that people in history are not so removed from you and me. And also to be dissuaded from the notion that what is happening right here and right now is the worst it has ever been or will ever be. He talked crap about organized religion and Christianity. He hated his government. And he found spiritual satisfaction in the amazing nature of the universe. Nothing new. Believers will believe. Non-believers will non-believe. :D (Update: his government refers to the monarchy he was protesting.)
