I am currently a student at Spring Arbor University. I have 2 classes left before I graduate with my BSW. In the Fall of 2012 during SWK 340, Social Work Practice with Individuals & Families, we were to give an oral presentation on a special population that faced adversity. The learning outcomes of this assignment included: 1. Demonstrate competency in applying generalist social work values and skills to a specific population. 2. Demonstrate competency in recognizing the needs of a diverse population. 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the effects of oppression, discrimination, and powerlessness on people, and their problem-solving abilities. As our special population, our group chose to profile transgender people. It was during my research for this project that I discovered what had occurred in 2007 between Dr. Julie Nemecek and Spring Arbor. The sheer hypocrisy of making a presentation on the discrimination that transgender people face, in order to obtain credit from an institution that in fact appeared to discriminate against LGBT individuals positively floored me. I was very vocal about this in class, and word got back to the main campus. I attend Spring Arbor via a satellite campus so a representative from SAU had to drive over a hundred miles to come give me a stern talking to . Our group still made our presentation. This was a video I created that was part of it.
