I am currently reading The Tipping point from Malcom, the 10000 hrs man :) This section talks about how Context influences things around it. So in 1980 the crime rate in suburban trains and stations of New York was at its peak. A new Person Mr.Gess was appointment to reduce the crime rate and make more people travel by suburban system, which by now was deserted coz of the unsafe environment. The first thing Mr. Gess did was to remove all the graffiti in train stations and trains. The youngsters will do graffiti, Gesss men will remove it, again they will go graffiti, again it will be removed. The second thing in action was to catch hold of people who travel without ticket. Gesss men arrested all the people without ticket and this happened for couple of months straight. Miraculously, the crime rates dropped and it was as good as nil. No theft, no armed attacks, nothing. It just show that how a graffiti and ticket less travel leads to crime. It could be small things but it influences people to take the system for granted and commit crimes. So the next time u jump a signal or cross the stop line, just thing that it could be a butterfly wing flapping, but it will result in a the entire city not being obeying traffic rules. :)
