I am deeply saddened to know that Distinguished Professor of International Law Alfred P. Rubin passed away peacefully at his home in Belmont, Massachusetts on November 30. Professor Rubin was a Professor of International Law for thirty years from 1973 until his retirement in 2002 at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy. Professor Rubin was a provocative scholar, a superb teacher, and a mentor and it is my privilege to be one his students, even if not so smart one, but I learned from him the importance of rule and practice of international law and endeavorment to plant the trees of laws to cope with the possible attack of devils along the shores of the civilizations and the maintainenance and integrity of peace in the human communities. I remember he expalined about the Thomas More and a Robert Bolt drama of A Man for All Seasons and once inspriringly stated persuasiveness is very important,(probably because at that time my command of English language capabilities were so bad and the result of written test was below passage?). He was a defense lawyer involved American soldiers murder case occured in American base in Japan when he was a very young military legal officer, so he told me because I was from from Tokyo during 1976 to 78.. For the past years, I frequented to attend the Reunion at the School in Boston, and every time I could only telephone his home and already Professor Rubin could not talk to me over the telephone and sick in bed, but I am sure he could recognize that his Japanese former student, even if not a smart one, came all the way and paid respect to the great teacher and scholar whom I met and learned in my life. Rubin, Alfred P. 83, of Belmont died peacefully at home on November 30. He leaves behind Susanne, his loving wife of 54 years, three beloved children, Conrad, Anna and Naomi, five grandchildren, and his brother, Sander. Mr. Rubin was a professor of public international law at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University until 2002. He received his B.A. (1952) and J.D. (1957) from Columbia University. While at Columbia Mr. Rubin was a nationally ranked foil fencer. His studies were interrupted by three years of military service in the Navy during the Korean War. Upon completing his J.D., Mr. Rubin attended Jesus College at Cambridge University for post-graduate studies, completing an M. Litt. He began his career in 1961 as a legal advisor to the Defense Department advancing to the position of Director of Trade Control in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense. In 1967, Mr. Rubin took an appointment at the University of Oregon Law School where he taught until joining the faculty of the Fletcher School in 1973.
