I am especially remembering today Jake Adam York (August 10, 1972 – December 16, 2012), whose death two years ago at forty left so many with a deep sense of loss. American poetry lost one of our finest younger poets who had accomplished so much with his writing that explored the history of the U.S. Civil Rights Movement and elegized individuals who sacrificed their lives to advance social justice. Jake was so very special to everyone who had the good fortune to know him and his talents as a poet, a writer, an intellectual with unique insights into so many aspects of American history and culture, an editor, a teacher, and a mentor cannot be overstated. But if you were among the very fortunate who counted yourself among Jakes family or friends today is just an additional reminder that there are not many people who have a presence in our lives like Jake did and we must remember what treasures they are. Jake, we miss you terribly, but we know our lives would be so much less without having had you in them. You helped make me a better editor, a better writer, a better person, and I will always be grateful that I had the chance to be your friend.
