I am finding the current conversation on the AC4H broker owned page sad news for the horse rescue industry. When rescues start infighting and bickering and pointing up short comings at each others facilities, the donated dollar is going to simply dry up. Dealers and brokers have long worked together at the auction, sparing each other from pointlessly bidding each other up as they are all trying to make a buck. Therefore, they will bid up horses that private parties are interested in to set the price for the day and to make the auction some money while they pick up the cheap low end unwanted horses once the private buyers are shopped out. Bleeding heart horse rescuers who are working off of limited funds and who need to turn horses around into rideable animals will now be splashed with the same muck being passed around on the AC4H page about the mark up on a $35 gelding. Do people really think it costs nothing to spend hours at the auction, to use phones and computers, to have transport and facilities to care for these horses--in general-- to take the risk of a vet bill while trying to feed and train up an animal so someone can give it a backyard home safely? Some people have built their barns on the back of rescue horses by providing QT services. Other people have faced huge indebtedness because they got over committed with sick auction horses that require a year of care. It is such an unfortunate conversation, and it will affect everyone when the donations freeze up out of sheer distrust.
