Since by reducing the force of pulling you use less energy to pull a weight up by using gears and pulling. But by using gears and pulley they wind up using less force then the energy used by it to go down. . You tell me that the energy needed to pull up the weight is more then the weight forgetting that you can MINIMIZE the force to pull up the weight and there for not care of how heavy the weight is as long as it can load a couple of car batteries. . And YES it may NOT give electricity to all your house, but if it give light to your street light it is enough electricity save to save some bucks especially is you tart using low energy lights that makes the SAME amount of light as a normal light but uses half as much energy for it.
