I am going to continue with my Iraq story tonight. In setting up a fire station you have to have mobile and stationary communications so the base can call in the fire alarms. We had the equipment but everything had to be programmed and then added to our fire trucks and vehicles, along with setting up the fire house with communications in Bagdad. We had a problem on distance communicating with our vehicles, so what I came up with is oldest trick in the book you get a bigger pole to mount the VHF antenna on and it provides more distance. So we went on a pole hunt in Bagdad looking for a pole that would work and we found one. Only it was mounted in cement and we needed a crane to obtain it, and yes we got permission to acquire the pole from the base to use for our base fire station. In a few days of operating and getting the logistics of a large crane, we pulled if off and get the light pole, mounted at hour headquarters with the vhf radio antenna mounted with all the cabling attached and secured. The true test came when our fire trucks were able to communicate 360 degrees around the entire base without any problems. Then we knew had succeeded at making it all work. At first we had an Iraqi contract with the civilians to mount all the radio equipment in our trucks. There contract didnt last long because of the very low class of work they did on installing the equipment.
