I am going to start a competition to lable the generation that lies beyond Generation Y. Is it as simple as Generation Z? This lot is born 2001 to 2018; Ys from 1983 to 2000. Ys had guilty, and therefore indulgent, working parents. Z...s parents have no guilt about working: how else are Xer parents going to buy a house? Households during Ys youth were filled with long-boom economic prosperity. Households during Zs youth are being filled with talk of downsizings, cutbacks and tax increases. Ys were told they were special from the age of 5--and of course they were. Anything is possible with a mum & dad safety net. And if it isnt mum & dad providing then the universe will provide. Behold the Ys: dreamers, entrepreneurs, livin life on the edge. The Zs will be different. They are the pragmatists. Cautioned by their parents: chose a course with a job outcome, not a course that will builds your boundless self esteem. I know you have the talent to become the next Leonardo di Caprio but there are better job prospect if you do accounting rather than drama. Okay. Bad example. Be a teacher. Be a nurse. Be something practical. I can see it now in the 2020s: the disillusioned Ys will be on the cusp of middle age wondering why they arent a celebrity and gorgeous, young, life-ahead-of-them Zs will be admonishing them for their poor choices in life. And in lifestyle villages the land over ageing fading baby boomers will look on smiling, thinking, about the delicious symmetry of life.
