I am grateful for the work that Chairman Rogers and others did in crafting the omnibus spending bill, and I appreciate the difficult task of appropriating discretionary funds while mandatory spending continues to grow rapidly on autopilot. I voted against this bill because members and staff were not given the required 72 hours to review the measure and I am not comfortable with using a veterans COLA reduction to pay for new spending in other areas. I will continue to push for permanent spending controls that make it more difficult for Congress to create new budget-busting entitlement spending, which has been the hallmark of Congress for many decades and why our nation finds itself in this fiscal mess today. Until Congress gets serious about the root problem – its entitlement-creating propensity – the problem will only get worse.
