I am grateful to Francis for toning down the rhetoric. I believe it has a direct effect on reducing violence and hate crimes towards my community. However, I really think that the recent announcements by the Vatican that have received so much attention are based on what people wish the document said rather than what it actually does. Here is a link to the summary put out by the Vatican and, in all honesty, it is as hurtful to read this in the restrictions it places on how to treat my community of sisters and brothers - as it always has been. How do you welcome people to a church by excluding them from Communion? How do you welcome people by not allowing them to join you at the table of the meal that is central to ones faith and spiritual life? How do you be inclusive and still not ordain women within the church to priesthood?
