I am happy to be back in Japan and honored to once again be a part of the Pacific Music Festival. This year marks the 25th anniversary of PMF, one of a trio of youth music festivals that are connected to the late, great Leonard Bernstein (along with Tanglewood in America and Schleswig Holstein in Europe). Leonard Bernstein was an energetic conductor, ground breaking third stream composer and a colorful character by all accounts. Maestro Bernstein was also a visionary that obviously understood the power and importance of the arts in society. As a student at PMF in 1995 and as a faculty member for the last five years, I have witnessed the power of music to break down social and political barriers to create understanding among people from very different countries and backgrounds-things the world sure needs more of.... Thankful to be here...
