I am happy to share a press release from Jamie Hepburn MSP regarding the future of Cumbernauld College. Hepburn Slams Labour’s Cumbernauld College Scaremongering Constituency MSP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth, Jamie Hepburn, has hit out at Mark Griffin MSP and Gregg McClymont MP for their scaremongering about the future of Cumbernauld College. In an article in the Cumbernauld News on 3rd July 2013, they were quoted as saying that the Scottish Government “is intent on closing Cumbernauld’s local college on the basis of a letter fated 7th June 2013 that was sent from the Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning to North Lanarkshire Council. However, the letter – which is a procedural one which is sent to education authorities in the circumstances where two colleges seek to merge with one another – is clear that the Colleges are merging to become a single institution, and crucially, is sets out, “no campus closures are planned, meaning that the Cumbernauld College site will remain open. Mr Hepburn has also hit out at claims made in the newspaper article by the Labour politicians that “course options will be transferred over to Motherwell College. The letter of 7th June makes no single reference to this. Mr Hepburn earlier today visited Cumbernauld Collge to meet with Martin McGuire, Principal Designate of the proposed merged college and Heather Urquhart, Acting Principal at Cumbernauld to discuss how the proposals are going forward. It is unclear whether or not Mark Griffin and Gregg McClymont have made efforts to contact the College about these matters Mr Hepburn said: “It is important for those of us who are elected politicians to make sure that we act responsibly and do not do anything to cause undue alarm to those we represent. In that regard, Mr Griffin and Mr McClymont have utterly failed. “They have given the impression that there will be no College in Cumbernauld, and I have had more than one person contact me to express concern that this might be the case. Of course, this is total and utter nonsense. “The letter of 7th June that they had previously referred to makes this clear when it explicitly states that no campus closures are planned as a consequence of the merger. So to posture otherwise is irresponsible scaremongering politics of the worst kind.
