I am having a fantastic time studying and playing drums, and recording creative percussion projects again too. It is so interesting the message I keep getting, receiving from somewhere..and giving. The further I go with drumming, the more I play, the more I study...the more I see I dont know. I am just sitting there sometimes and realizing I dont know shit! Sometimes I am almost overwhelmed with the unknowingness of it all. I am sitting next to other players, listening to them play different material and I am in awe at the beauty of it. There is so much different material out there. Dont ever think you know it all. I have surrendered to this fact. I am listening to the same CDs I have listened to for years. Over and over and I am always hearing it differently, always learning something new. I listened to one of my CDs tonight on the way home after playing all day and it was almost like i never heard it before. I recognized the phrases, the same ones my teacher taught me. But somehow they sounded different, in a good way. I a hearing more of it. Because I continue to study and keep my beginners mind, (I have no choice) I can hear more and more of what i wasnt hearing before. The CDs remain the same of course but i am changing. When i first started studying traditional and folkloric music and drumming it all sounded like the same thing. Its hard to believe, but i remember clearly not being able to distinguish the different rhythms and pieces at first. And then slowly over time its like it reveals itself. Never fully, but there is always a layer being peeled off it seems.
