I am home this morning waiting for the community nurse to flush my port. The hospital will not do it any more so I have to have the community nurse come to my home. Sorry but I think this is such a waste of precious resources. As I am perfectly capable of getting around & could go anywhere to have it done I think that they should send the community nurses to people who really need it & cant get around. Surely it is more cost effective to have people like me go to the one spot for things like this than have the expense of an on road nurse come to me. Anyway, it is what it is & now I shall wait till she arrives. I have my first Head Cold/Virus since being diagnosed. My daughter has been unwell for over 6 weeks so I was bound to get it eventually. I have lost my voice from it and I dont feel to bad but I cant wait for it to go. Dr put me on antibiotics, I think to prevent it getting to my chest & causing major problems. I rang to speak with the Specialist on Monday after I read the information brochure for Thalidomide. I have concerns for the high chance of it causing Blood clots having previously had 2 - 1 in 1984 after my major car accident & one in July 2008 when I developed a Pulmonary Embolism out of the blue. The specialist rang me back yesterday to say yes I would need to take a preventative medication as I would be a very high risk patient. Im glad I called, I know they are busy but this is a very important thing. So now I will have to self inject everyday a shot of Clexane which is a blood thinner(I did this for 12mths after the P.E). I will also have regular testing. Better to be safe than sorry! Today I pick up my scripts for Thalidomide, Dexamethasone & Clexane. I will start the regime on Monday so the course of Antibiotics is finished & I am not mixing to many things at once. Im also going back to the GP this afternoon to make sure this bug has not gone to my chest & all is well. I leave on Tuesday for my well overdue cruise holiday with my daughter & her 2 friends. I cant wait but hope both my daughter & myself are over this crappy bug by then. I hope all my fellow Sydney siders survive the heat of today & what is predicted for over the weekend.
