I am in favor of the US taking action in Syria if only US foreign policy was consistent. We have supported military juntas ( General Pinochet in Chile), presidents-for-life (Egypt and Philippians), undemocratic governments (Middle Eastern Kings, absolute and hereditary emirates) and the Shaw of Iran; then we claim we support democracy. We allow ourselves the right to invade neighboring countries (Panama & Barbados) and then say Russia cannot invade Afghanistan (1980) or Iraq cannot occupy Kuwait (1990). We organize a massive Persian Gulf I coalition to militarily remove Iraq from Kuwait but for 23 years before allow Israel to occupy Palestine and dehumanize the Palestinians. We say that Israeli colonies are illegal but continue to fund the colonies that Israel continues to build on Palestinian land. Despite these inconsistencies in US foreign policies, I believe that the Assad regime needs to be removed and needs to be held accountable for killing so many Syrian citizens. But to be consistent, Israel also needs to be held accountable for its apartheid practices. Will the US be consistent? I am afraid not. Speak up and demand that US foreign policy be consistent and evenhanded.
